41 Lawrence, pencil by Augustus John.

This, perhaps the most famous image of Lawrence, was drawn during the 1919 Peace Conference. 'I was looking out of his flat window, in Paris, into the street, when he caught me in two minutes. It is the first drawing of me he ever made.'

Lawrence variously described it as 'a very pretty pencil head of me in Arab dress', and 'quite a meek creature'.

Augustus John, pencil.
