| 35 Buxton, pencil by William Roberts. '. . . a man of varied experience of life, with a supple brain and friendly observations.' In August 1922 Lawrence wrote to Buxton: 'Dear Robin, I’ve finished my book on the Arab Revolt . . . What I’m writing to you about is your head . . . I’m now having a small batch of Englishmen drawn in London . . . For you I’d like William Roberts . . . I think he might do something rather subtle of you, because you don’t look like an officer.' Two months later, Lawrence wrote again: 'Dear Robin, It must have been quite an effort: and the result is astonishing: you have become severe, abstracted, slightly sorry: with the laughter gone from your face . . . A wonderful drawing. Did Roberts bother you very much with sittings and sitting still?' |
