| 32 Guy Dawnay, pencil by Henry Lamb. 'Dawnay was mainly intellect. He lacked the eagerness of Bols, and the calm drive and human understanding of Allenby, who was the man the men worked for, the graven image all of us worshipped. Dawnay was a cold shy mind, gazing on our efforts with a bleak eye, always thinking, thinking. Beneath this mathematical surface were hidden passionate many-sided convictions, a reasoned scholarship in higher warfare, and a brilliant bitterness of judgement. He was disappointed with us and with life, which had not gone with him as he wished.' |
