27 Hogarth, charcoal by Augustus John.

'Not a wild man, but Mentor to all of us was Hogarth, our father confessor and adviser, who brought us parallels and lessons of history, and moderation, and courage.'

In a letter to Charlotte Shaw, Lawrence spoke of his personal debt to Hogarth: 'A very kind, very wise, very loveable man . . . I’d put him high among the really estimable human beings. All my opportunities, all those I’ve wasted, came directly or indirectly, out of his trust in me'.

Augustus John, charcoal.
