14 Ghalib, pastel by Eric Kennington.

'The Turks came forward with three battalions, and a number of mule-mounted infantry, and camelry. Their command was in the hands of Ghalib Bey, who handled his troops with great keenness'

Lawrence was impressed by this image: 'I hadn’t seen, till I got the set, how monumental that portrait of him is (monumental: not a very good word. "Vital" perhaps. Anyway astonishing, loud, vigorous, arresting).'

Ghalib is the only Turk to appear as a Seven Pillars illustration.

Eric Kennington, pastel.
