4 Boyle, pastel by Eric Kennington.

'. . . a very professional officer, as alert as any man could be, both businesslike and official, sometimes a little intolerant of easy-going things and people. Red-haired men are seldom patient, and "Ginger Boyle" as the men called him was a warm man.'

Briefing Kennington for this portrait, Lawrence wrote: 'A good face (hot as mustard, red-haired, socialist, thinker, disciplinarian: thinks the world was made for Naval Officers: very decent: full of laughter of a slightly sharp sort: restless, impatient); a real bad sitter: but a first-rate face.'
