From editor to publisher....
Jeremy Wilson
Before completing Lawrence of Arabia, The Authorised Biography in
1989, I had started work on a major scholarly edition of Lawrence's correspondence. However,
I couldn't find a publisher. For mainstream
trade publishers, the market for literary/historical correspondence is
too small to be profitable. Academic publishers might have been
interested - but only if I could find some way to cover my research costs.
So,
with my wife Nicole, I set up Castle Hill Press. Over half of
the retail price of a book usually goes to distributors and booksellers.
Because we sell direct, we can use that money to pay for research.
We
take great care over editorial work, aiming for high standards.
Castle Hill Press books are issued in limited editions, typeset to fine-press standards
and printed by high-quality printers.
Bindings range from library-quality cloth to goatskin 'specials' with additional content.
We believe that Castle Hill Press books represent excellent value
for money, especially
where content is previously unpublished.
Visiting a distant library to see some Lawrence letters can often cost far more than
one of our Letters
volumes, to say nothing of the time we have spent researching editorial
notes.
We
offer special prices for pre-publication subscriptions. There are also
big discounts on the price of previously published volumes in the T.E.
Lawrence Letters series for new subscribers who order more than
one volume at once.
